Ang “Tabungaw,” sa Ilocano, o “Upo” sa Filipino, ay isang uri ng pananim na gulay na maaaring gawing sumbrero na sikat suotin lalo na rehiyon ng Ilocos. Gayunpaman, kapansin-pansin na ang sining ng paggawa ng “tabungaw” ay isa na ngayong humihinang industriya. Matuto nang higit pa tungkol sa ‘kattukong’ o ‘tabungaw’ mula kay Tata Pilo, isang simpleng magsasaka at nakatanggap ng Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan. (“Tabungaw,” in Ilocano,or “Upo” in Filipino, is a vegetable-crop that can be made into a weatherproof especially famous in Ilocos region. It is unfortunate, however, that the art of making the “gourd hat” is now a dying industry. Ang mga katutubo mula sa lalawigan ng Abra, na tinatawag na Itneg, ay naniniwala na ang mga disenyo ng mga tela na ginagamit nila ay nagpapakita ng kanilang mataas na pagsasaalang-alang sa mga espiritu at diyos ng kalikasan na nagbibigay sa kanila ng pagkain at pagpapala. Matuto nang higit pa tungkol sa kanilang kultura at tradisyon ng paghabi.

(The indigenous people from the province of Abra, who are called Itneg, believed that the designs of the textiles they use depicts their high regard for the spirits and gods of the nature that provide them with food and blessings.

DFA Launches Diskubre Tour 2020

The Department of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Department of Tourism, local government units and other agencies, is organizing Diskubre, an immersion tour for second-generation Filipinos and young foreign-born Filipinos to promote deeper appreciation of the Filipino heritage, and a means of giving back to the motherland, the Philippines.

Diskubre tour will be held from 3-13 January 2020 in Manila and Bicol. It is being organized The tour is open to all Filipinos and persons with Filipino heritage aged 18-40 years old. Younger participants are allowed provided they are accompanied by their parents throughout the tour. Would be participants are expected to document their trip through social media, blog, or videos featuring the sights and their experiences, and be prepared for activities such as hiking, swimming, biking, and walking.

Diskubre tour will involve immersion themes including one or a combination of nature and habitat preservation; sustainable farming and cultural exchange; fisher folk community integration; women and children issues; micro-small-medium enterprises (MSMEs) promoting Philippine products; indigenous people and traditional customs.

Only twenty (20) slots are available for the participants, who are responsible for their own airfare, hotel accommodations, meals, land arrangement, ground transportation, insurance and other incidental expenses outside of the tour program.

To know more about the tour and reserve a slot, interested participants may visittravelwiseonline.com/diskubre Travelwise, the tour company which handled the coordination of Diskubre from Washington DC during its first addition, has been chosen to coordinate the registration with their local tour operator counterpart, Southeast Travel. It will also send instructions for the payment and ticketing by email.
